A new partnership between Indicium Dynamics, Goldwind Australia, and Sustainable Timber Tasmania (STT) has delivered the latest deployment of Indicium’s growing Fire Foresight AI bushfire detection network at Brady’s Fire Tower in Tasmania’s Central Highlands. The deployment represents a significant investment by Goldwind via its proposed Bashan Wind Farm development. This marks the first time in Tasmania that this technology has been funded by a renewable energy provider, reinforcing Goldwind’s commitment to protecting the communities in which they operate.
The Fire Foresight Solution uses artificial intelligence and advanced computer vision to detect fire signatures in challenging terrains. Operating 24/7/365, the system provides real-time fire detection and rapid alerting to contain fires before they escalate. In addition to protecting local communities, the system will play a critical role in safeguarding existing and new nation-building infrastructure such as wind farms and transmission networks within the area.
“Bushfire detection is a major challenge in Tasmania’s Central Highlands, which includes vast areas of forest that cannot be easily monitored using current methods” said David Rogers, Development Manager for the proposed Bashan Wind Farm.
The camera adds to the fastest-growing network of AI-Fire Detection cameras in Tasmania
The camera at Brady’s Fire Tower adds to the largest and fastest-growing network of fire detection cameras in Tasmania. There are currently 10 Fire Foresight cameras watching over the Tasmanian landscape, enhancing the state’s ability to detect and respond to bushfires quickly.
Jason Vinen, District Officer, Tasmania Fire Service commented “This is quickly becoming a valuable tool for fire responders and we recognise Indicium Dynamics and Goldwind’s efforts to progress the investment in this network for the benefit of the surrounding communities and neighbouring assets”.
The Fire Foresight Solution operates continuously, ensuring that any fire, no matter how small, is detected quickly. With its combination of advanced artificial intelligence and computer vision, the system delivers real-time insights, empowering fire managers to take decisive action to control blazes before they grow out of control.
“Our network of fire detection infrastructure is growing rapidly. Through our joint leadership, the 10 sites today will soon be over 20, providing our stakeholders and emergency management personnel with real-time situational awareness across more of the State”, said Rob Vernon CEO of Indicium Dynamics. “As we continue to grow we are investing in a range of technologies incorporating hyper-localised weather, geo-spatial modelling and autonomous drone investigations, to more rapidly get information where it is needed in the event of any emergency.”
Preparing for a Dangerous Fire Season
The community of Dee in the Central Highlands knows the destruction of bushfires all too well, after flames swept through the region in February, destroying 5,000 hectares of forest and critical infrastructure. With bushfire risks expected to rise dramatically this summer (Climate Council, 2024), early detection like the kind provided by the Fire Foresight solution is vital for keeping all communities, especially remote communities, safe.
Collaboration for Safety and Resilience:
Goldwind Australia: As a global leader in renewable energy solutions, Goldwind’s commitment to sustainability drives its investment in this life-saving technology. By investing in the Fire Foresight Solution on Brady’s Fire Tower, Goldwind strengthens its efforts to protect Tasmania’s communities and natural assets.
Sustainable Timber Tasmania (STT): Managing over 800,000 hectares of public production forests, STT ensures a balance between sustainable timber harvesting and environmental preservation. The addition of this fire detection system enhances their existing network of nine cameras, safeguarding vital forests and nearby rural communities.
“The AI technology used in this fire detection provides accurate early identification of potential fires. The data and detections are verified by Fire Foresight’s team 24/7, and we trust that any notifications sent to our duty officers are actual fires that we should be concerned about, which then enables us to focus on our immediate response,” said Dean Sheehan, Fire Management Manager, Sustainable Timber Tasmania.
